Pixar’s new blockbuster Brave film is set in Scotland and has been inspired by a number of Scottish castles, mainly Eilean Donan Castle and Dunnottar Castle. The film has made $66.7m (£42.8m) in its opening weekend, knocking Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted off the top spot. Brave is the first Disney Pixar animation with a female protagonist. Brave, which will close the Edinburgh International Film Festival later this week, is the the 13th consecutive Pixar release to open at number one. “Their track record is just unbelievable,” said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com.
“The Pixar brand just carries so much weight with the audience. It doesn’t matter almost what the story is about if it has the Pixar name.”
Brave’s heroine, who rebels against her family’s plans for her to marry, is voiced by Kelly Macdonald, of Trainspotting and Boardwalk Empire fame.She was born and bred in Scotland , as were most of the cast, which includes Robbie Coltrane, comedian and now chat show host Craig Ferguson and Macdonald’s Trainspotting co-star Kevin McKidd, better known to American audiences for his role in Grey’s Anatomy.

VisitScotland found out that Mel Gibson’s film Braveheart in 1995 brought a whole flood of visitors to Scotland , mainly from America.They have decided to try and capitalise on Brave to promote Scotland and bring a whole new generation of visitors to Scotland.
VisitScotland has launched its biggest ever global marketing campaign, working alongside Disney Pixar to reach millions of potential visitors across the world. The campaign will showcase every corner of Scotland through a new TV and cinema advert, a new website and extensive marketing and events activity in countries ranging from the US and UK to France and Germany. The TV and cinema campaign will reach around 80 million people in the UK and abroad and is expected to boost the Scottish economy by around £140m.
The campaign will see the airing of VisitScotland’s first TV advert in North America for ten years – thanks to a major funding boost by the Scottish Government. The timing of the campaign is crucial, with this market showing encouraging signs of recovery. The number of American visitors increased by 15% last year and it is Scotland’s biggest overseas market, with more than 400,000 visitors spending £311m every year.
UK audiences will also be treated to the new advert in cinemas and TV in a special UK version which will launch when the film opens in August.
The new 30-second advert, which is voiced by the BBC’s historian and presenter Neil Oliver, will be broadcast on some of the world’s largest networks and in cinemas before the film, taking creative inspiration from the theme “Scotland. Where legends come to life.”

Edinburgh Airport was named “Best European airport: 5m – 10m passengers” at the eighth Annual Airports Council International awards in Madrid. The airport, which changed hands this month in a £807.2 million deal, was given the award for its focus on its customer base and the responses to the feedback that they provide.
Edinburgh held off competition from Cologne, Birmingham, Luton, Nice, Marseille and Milan to hold on to the title.
Chief executive Jim O’Sullivan, said: “This is an outstanding achievement. To win the prestigious award for the second consecutive year is impressive enough, but to do so whilst having the challenge of being sold is truly amazing.
“The team at Edinburgh airport is dedicated, focused and deserving of this accolade. We will keep working hard to deliver what our passengers want – great service and a diverse range of routes. That’s what’s at the core of this and last year’s success.”
Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) took ownership of the capital airport on June 1 after buying it from BAA in an arrangement announced in April. The airport is also busy because of the construction work taking place there at the moment. Edinburgh’s new tramline terminates at the airport and visitors to the airport will notice the end of the line being installed just a few yards from the terminal building.
BAA was forced to sell it after the Competition Commission ruled that it must sell either Glasgow or Edinburgh airport.

Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) organizers have finalized plans for its industry program content including an onstage one-on-one career interview with Oscar-winning cinematographer Chris Menges by fellow craftsman Seamus McGarvey during this year’s fest.
This year’s industry content is planned to roll out across nine days during this year’s festival with discussions focusing on all areas of the filmmaking process.
The program will also focus on moving from first to second features with speakers including Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) and Nick Whitfield (Skeletons) lined up for a panel named “First Feature and Beyond.”
The Danish Film Institute is also partnering with the EIFF Industry team to host a discussion on Danish documentaries featured in the EIFF program.
Producers Peter Engel (The Ambassador) and Helle Faber (Au Pair; Putin’s Kiss) aim to examine the Danish documentary landscape and their successful co-producing experiences in the Danish Documentary Focus.
Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey returns to the series of conversations he has hosted in recent years with colleagues working in his field and will interview Menges (Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close).
Other filmmakers involved in the industry events at the EIFF include James Marsh and Tom Bradby (Shadow Dancer) who will discuss the writer/director relationship and Peter Strickland (Berberian Sound Studio) tapped to talk about the use of sound design and music to enhance audience’s movie going experience.
The British Film Institute, Creative England and Film London are also partnering with EIFF on events during the Festival.
The BFI will be running a “Meet The Funders” panel with reps from Creative England, Creative Scotland, Film Agency for Wales, Screen Yorkshire and others, advising on the funds they offer.
